Would you like to discover a powerful way to tap into your creative unconscious?

How about blending art, writing and found materials to create your very own storybook?

This is the magic of the altered book. Altered books are mixed media artworks that can incorporate text, collage, painting, drawing, journaling and scrapbooking. Instead of using a blank canvas or journal, we use an old book as our starting point. While altering its pages to create our own artwork, we enter a journey of self-discovery, with our creative unconscious as our guide.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of artistic experience. It is especially helpful for non-artists who would like to explore their creativity and learn about working in various media, but who may not feel confident with drawing, painting or other skills that take time to build.

This workshop will look at different ways to treat canvas and paint permitting a more creative solution to painting rather than staying with the basic format of stretched canvas over a wooden rectangular frame. This workshop will look at using different materials in very different ways to achieve other levels of self-expression. T his workshop could be considered a laboratory for experimentation and examination of other ways to paint, communicate and express.

Drawing is one of the foundations for art. The ability to sketch an idea become critical in communication and in working out visual solutions. Irrespective of profession or duty, sketches are a fast and easy way to communicate. However, in order to get the most from them, it helps in having a basic foundation in understanding how to draw and how to see. Based in part on the book “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain,” I have developed some core exercises and presentations that can help artists at all levels improve in terms of composition, comprehension and visual expression in a program that builds step by step foundation ideas on drawing. It has proven highly effective in the past in terms of helping brand new artists, those not familiar with drawing at all and those who have experience, but wish to move forward and develop further.

Multimedia artist J Morales will transform the Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square into a Cenotaph in honor of the green world we are turning into ashes. After we have paved the planet, removing all forests and jungles, what will be the residue left behind?

In photography and computing, a greyscale digital image gives the value of each pixel as a single sample -carrying only intensity information. Images of this sort are composed exclusively of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest.

A cenotaph is an “empty tomb” or a monument erected in honor of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere.

The multimedia installation will combine large and small format paintings, photography, readymade sculpture, somber lighting and 2 channel audio to form a complete experience. The piece speaks to the decay of nature, due to pollution and human indifference, by producing an apparition of what once was. It will briefly exist as a memorial to what will be lost due to our carelessness.

J Morales has been working the fields of visual, performance and sound art for over 20 years. He has been active in event design, musical performance, painting and performance art for the last 8 years in the Pacific Northwest and has recently returned to Arizona to continue his work in multiple fields of artistic endeavor and personal growth.

Opening reception, First Friday December 2nd – running through till 3rd Friday December 16th – also available for viewing by appointment.

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square is seeking art instructors in a variety of mediums for its new classes/workshops program.

The gallery, which functions as an exhibition space for artists on First and Third Fridays, belongs to the non-profit organization Artlink Phoenix, one of the oldest, volunteer run, non-profit 501C3 arts organizations in downtown Phoenix. Its mission is to facilitate the monthly First Fridays art walk and the annual Art Detour self-guided tour.

The classes will be held at the Artlink Gallery, housed in the historical Carriage House at Historic Heritage Square. The 1899 structure is located in downtown Phoenix at 115 N. 6th St, Phoenix AZ 85004. The Artlink Gallery is 300 sq and has lots of natural light flooding in from two large glass doors. Public restrooms are nearby for cleaning up. There are lots of options for days and time slots. The classes can take place indoors, as well as, outdoor amongst the beautiful view of the park and its historical structures. Also, there are opportunities to walk downtown for additional inspiration. Restaurants, such as Rose & Crown, Nobue and Pizzeria Bianco are next door.

We are now accepting art class proposals for adult students. The workshops will take place beginning of January through the end of February 2012. We are looking for classes in a wide variety of disciplines, such as mixed media, painting, drawing, fiber, photography, ceramics, air brush, water color, video etc.

Please email the proposal with the following:

-Bio

-Résumé

-2 References

-An abstract about the class and breakdown of dates and times that you are available to teach.

Since childhood Smith has drawn and painted with anything he could get his hands on. Smith’s art is rendered in his own “anomalous personal world.” His paintings are filled with bright vivid colors and patterns that allow every element to unconsciously express itself and interact subliminally. Smith’s figures and settings, go back to his childhood art. The frankness and childlike simplicity of the images lead the viewer into the painting, while allowing the viewer to be unencumbered by everyday imagery.

This exhibition is a collection of hand written poetry combined with photographs made from an intuitive response to selected poems. The installation of the original art will create an interactive environment where viewers are enticed to have a more involved physical connection with the poetry and retrospective/current Merge community. Viewers are invited to remove poems and photographs from the gallery wall to read leisurely during the exhibition. There will be a poetry reading that will showcase the poem through the voice of the author. Limited edition copies of the journal will be for sale.
“Making collaborative art in this way is just an organic creation of original synergetic work. I am mostly excited about the fact that the exhibition will be visual, vocal, and audible.” -Sean Deckert

Juliet Oglesbee is an emerging artist fascinated by human emotions and the inner-workings of grief. My Forest and Sea engulfs the viewer in the exquisite pain, alienation, and upheaval of reality that occurs when an individual experiences loss. The ordinary is isolated and out of place in a world turned upside down. Many aspects of the piece are inviting, while at the same time, causing discomfort, melancholy and panic.
