The gallery will be open for the closing reception on Third Friday and for Art Detour 24 Weekend.

Cassano’s multimedia and concrete pieces bring forth a visual narrative of the modern-day social setting we live in. The viewer can almost interpret sound in Cassano’s intuitive placement of her found objects within the concrete. The result is a cold manifestation of structure and the synthetic.

“With my art-making process, I seek to create an ongoing dialogue of visual elements that explore ideas directly related to environmental adaptation, integrating both manufactured and dried organic found objects into concrete. With this difficult, yet unique medium as an art-making process, my intent is to create intricate assemblages which represent ideas related to our societal modern-day adaptations. Upon viewing, the origins of these salvage objects seem to appeal to our most basic human curiosities and the viewer is visually persuaded to lean in closely – to peer in – becoming intimately engaged with these small reassembled environments. The deliberate combination and composition of objects serve to signify the challenges of each of our own environmental adaptations.”- Christine Cassano

Join artist Chad Belote in his tribute to the individual. Smoke and Curtains is an exhibition of paintings that “seek to reconcile the diverse aspects of history and thought, and achieve a coherent truth”. Open reception will be held Friday, February third from six to ten P.M.

Chad Belote’s work is an exploration of universal concepts such as the freedom of the individual, conformity, and spirituality. “The mind senses the environment, and so builds the brain and body. We are the response to something much greater; we should recognize that and so live at peace. The troubled mind cannot learn.”

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square is hosting workshops
January 30th-March 11 2012

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square is excited to be hosting adult workshops in a variety of mediums! With quality teachings at affordable prices you will have the opportunity to further your artistic skills and techniques; or for beginners who would like to explore their artistic side to start developing them. The gallery, which functions as an exhibition space for artists on First and Third Fridays, is part of the non-profit organization Artlink Phoenix, one of the oldest, volunteer-run, non-profit 501C3 arts organizations in downtown Phoenix.

The 8 week workshops will run from January 14 -March 11, 2012. This extensive visual arts program will include mixed media, painting, drawing, fiber, photography, ceramics, air brush, water color, video, writing, book and paper art, performance, bead work, fibers, and sculpture.

Our art instructors are professionals in their fields with tremendous talent, skills and abilities that are excited to pass on to their students.

The classes will be held at the Artlink Gallery, housed in the Carriage House at Historic Heritage Square. The 1899 structure is located in downtown Phoenix at 115 N. 6th St, Phoenix AZ 85004. The Artlink Gallery is 300 sq ft and has lots of natural light flooding in from two large glass doors. Classes will take place indoors, as well as, outdoor in the beautiful view of the park and its historical structures. Also, there are opportunities to walk downtown for additional inspiration. Restaurants, such as Rose & Crown, Nobuo and Pizzeria Bianco are next door.

Would you like to discover a powerful way to tap into your creative unconscious?

How about blending art, writing and found materials to create your very own storybook?

This is the magic of the altered book. Altered books are mixed media artworks that can incorporate text, collage, painting, drawing, journaling and scrapbooking. Instead of using a blank canvas or journal, we use an old book as our starting point. While altering its pages to create our own artwork, we enter a journey of self-discovery, with our creative unconscious as our guide.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of artistic experience. It is especially helpful for non-artists who would like to explore their creativity and learn about working in various media, but who may not feel confident with drawing, painting or other skills that take time to build.

Materials needed:

Book/magazine/pamphlet/journal

Magazine pictures, photos, papers, embellishments, etc

Glue sticks

Scissors

There are many people in our lives that we honor: our ancestors, parents, friends and most importantly ourselves. In Mexico, ancestors and loved ones are honored during the Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) celebration, in which an Ofrenda or shrine is constructed. Your honoring box or mini Ofrenda will become a way to recognize important people and events in your life.

Masks are used around the world to help humans transform their identity, celebrate special occasions and dress up . Wearing a masks can temporarily turn you into a super hero, royalty, monster or animal. Whether fancy or simple the mask you create will help you to transform into someone or something else, maybe and alien.

Multimedia artist J Morales will transform the Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square into a Cenotaph in honor of the green world we are turning into ashes. After we have paved the planet, removing all forests and jungles, what will be the residue left behind?

In photography and computing, a greyscale digital image gives the value of each pixel as a single sample -carrying only intensity information. Images of this sort are composed exclusively of shades of gray, varying from black at the weakest intensity to white at the strongest.

A cenotaph is an “empty tomb” or a monument erected in honor of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere.

The multimedia installation will combine large and small format paintings, photography, readymade sculpture, somber lighting and 2 channel audio to form a complete experience. The piece speaks to the decay of nature, due to pollution and human indifference, by producing an apparition of what once was. It will briefly exist as a memorial to what will be lost due to our carelessness.

J Morales has been working the fields of visual, performance and sound art for over 20 years. He has been active in event design, musical performance, painting and performance art for the last 8 years in the Pacific Northwest and has recently returned to Arizona to continue his work in multiple fields of artistic endeavor and personal growth.

Opening reception, First Friday December 2nd – running through till 3rd Friday December 16th – also available for viewing by appointment.

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square

The Artlink Gallery at Heritage Square is seeking art instructors in a variety of mediums for its new classes/workshops program.

The gallery, which functions as an exhibition space for artists on First and Third Fridays, belongs to the non-profit organization Artlink Phoenix, one of the oldest, volunteer run, non-profit 501C3 arts organizations in downtown Phoenix. Its mission is to facilitate the monthly First Fridays art walk and the annual Art Detour self-guided tour.

The classes will be held at the Artlink Gallery, housed in the historical Carriage House at Historic Heritage Square. The 1899 structure is located in downtown Phoenix at 115 N. 6th St, Phoenix AZ 85004. The Artlink Gallery is 300 sq and has lots of natural light flooding in from two large glass doors. Public restrooms are nearby for cleaning up. There are lots of options for days and time slots. The classes can take place indoors, as well as, outdoor amongst the beautiful view of the park and its historical structures. Also, there are opportunities to walk downtown for additional inspiration. Restaurants, such as Rose & Crown, Nobue and Pizzeria Bianco are next door.

We are now accepting art class proposals for adult students. The workshops will take place beginning of January through the end of February 2012. We are looking for classes in a wide variety of disciplines, such as mixed media, painting, drawing, fiber, photography, ceramics, air brush, water color, video etc.

Please email the proposal with the following:

-Bio

-Résumé

-2 References

-An abstract about the class and breakdown of dates and times that you are available to teach.

Since childhood Smith has drawn and painted with anything he could get his hands on. Smith’s art is rendered in his own “anomalous personal world.” His paintings are filled with bright vivid colors and patterns that allow every element to unconsciously express itself and interact subliminally. Smith’s figures and settings, go back to his childhood art. The frankness and childlike simplicity of the images lead the viewer into the painting, while allowing the viewer to be unencumbered by everyday imagery.
